The University of Tokyo states it was founded in 1877 and is the oldest and largest of Japan's national universities. Its own figures give 29,669 students, including 5,234 international students, as of December 2025. Teaching is organised in ten faculties, and the university lists graduate degree programmes taught entirely in English across medicine, engineering, science, agriculture, economics, information studies and public policy.
Kyoto University states that Kyoto Imperial University was founded by imperial ordinance on 18 June 1897, the second university established in Japan. Its Facts and Figures publication reports 12,852 undergraduate and 9,574 graduate students as of 1 May 2023, with about 2,988 international students. The university has ten faculties, all offering undergraduate degrees, alongside eighteen graduate schools and a professional law school.
The University of Osaka states it was officially founded in 1931 as Japan's sixth imperial university. Its outline page reports 15,194 undergraduates and 8,139 graduate students, including 2,611 international students. It comprises eleven undergraduate schools and fifteen graduate schools covering fields from letters and law to dentistry, pharmaceutical sciences and information science, and charges JPY 535,800 a year in tuition.

Waseda University states that Shigenobu Okuma founded it as Tokyo Senmon Gakko on 21 October 1882, with an inaugural class of 80 students. It now lists 13 undergraduate schools and 20 graduate schools. Its International Admissions Office states that six undergraduate schools offer English-based degree programmes and that approximately 8,000 international students from 115 countries and regions were enrolled in 2023.
